Basics of Angle Grinder

An angle grinder, also known as a disc grinder or a side grinder, is a handheld power tool used for grinding and polishing. Although designed originally for stiff abrasive discs, the availability of an adaptable power supply has promoted its usage with a wide range of cutters and accessories.

Angle grinders can be run by compressed air or an electric motor. An abrasive disc or a thinner cut-off disc, both of which may be changed when worn, is mounted on a geared head that the motor drives at a right angle. Angle grinders often include a side handle for two-handed use and an adjustable guard. Depending on their speed range, certain angle grinders can be used as sanders by employing a sanding disc with a backing pad or disc. Depending on the level of flexibility required, the backing system is often composed of hard plastic, phenolic resin, or medium-hard rubber.

Angle grinders are frequently used in construction, metallurgy, emergency rescues, and even bicycle theft. They often exist in workshops, service garages, and car body repair facilities. When attempting to choose the best angle grinder for the job, there are a lot of options available. The size of the grinding disc and the motor’s power are the two most crucial considerations when selecting a grinder. Other considerations are the arbor size, rpm, and power supply (electric or pneumatic). Power and disc size typically rise concurrently. In most cases, disc size is expressed in inches or millimeters. Angle grinder discs are often available in sizes of 4, 4.5, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 12 inches in the United States, with the 4 and 4.5″ being the most common. Angle grinder discs in Europe are typically 115 and 125 millimeters in size. There are also considerably smaller pneumatic grinder discs available. Pneumatic grinders are often employed for lighter demanding tasks that call for more accuracy. This is probably because pneumatic grinders, which lack the heavy copper motor windings that electric grinders have, may be smaller and lighter while still maintaining their power, but it is more difficult for an electric grinder to keep appropriate power with reduced dimensions. Larger, more demanding operations are more frequently completed using electric grinders. There are, however, both large pneumatic grinders and small electrical grinders.

Angle Grinders: How to Select the Best One?

The selection of a suitable Angle Grinder is based on the requirements, i.e. the application for which you want an Angle Grinder. Angle grinders of all shapes, sizes, and functions are available at Linquip.

These are the key characteristics that you must consider when purchasing an angle grinder.

1) Professional or DIY

Angle grinders are produced for two primary markets: DIY and Professional, like the majority of power equipment. In this sense, a DIY user would be a homeowner or hobbyist who uses the instrument sometimes, whereas a professional user would be someone who likely uses a grinder on a daily basis. Professional-quality equipment is designed to survive the rigors of the workplace and should, in theory, be able to handle this greater workload, whereas the majority of DIY grade instruments do not need to be quite as durable. Professional grade tools typically cost more as a result, but it is important to note that they are completely guaranteed for business usage, in contrast to DIY grade tools, which are not. Professional tools may also be offered for use with step down transformers that have either 240v mains plugs or 110v plugs.

2) Disc Size

The power of the motor grinder is generally determined by the size of the disc. The strength of your angle grinder will increase as the disc size increases. From small to large, there are many different disc sizes available. Generally, angle grinders are categorized according to the size of disc they are intended to work with, which is often one of three sizes: 115mm (4 1/2″), 125mm (5″), or 230mm (9″). However, there are additional alternatives as well. This is to account for the vast range of tasks that these technologies are utilized for. For instance, the best angle grinder for wire brushing metal fence railings won’t be the best angle grinder for cutting through thick paving slabs, and vice versa. The smaller grinders are lightweight and maneuverable, but the discs they employ have a limited depth of cut and are inefficient for larger jobs. A 9′′ grinder, on the other hand, can cut through considerably deeper and wider materials in a single pass, but it is significantly heavier and unwieldy, and it will rapidly become tiring to use for any length of time. It’s worth noting that the majority of grinders sold are in the 115mm and 125mm sizes, and discs and accessories for these machines are usually simpler to find in high-street stores than for less common models.

3) Variable Speed

Angle grinders operate at high speeds. When cutting or grinding metal, most corded 115mm angle grinders operate at about 11,000 revolutions per minute (rpm), which allows the tool to finish the task fast. However, not all applications can benefit from this performance. For instance, even though they operate much more quickly than special machines for these tasks, grinders can be equipped with attachments for polishing stone or backing pads for attaching sanding discs. Angle grinders are frequently used in conjunction with wire brushes, each of which has a speed limit over which they cannot be used safely. It is frequently desired or necessary in certain situations to be able to reduce the speed in order to retain control, safety, and to prevent causing damage to the workpiece. Variable speed control is not commonly found in angle grinders, but it can provide the operator with significantly more control and is worth considering if you intend to use the tool for purposes other than cutting and grinding. The Bosch AdvancedGrind 18, a cordless angle grinder on the Bosch Power4All 18v platform, is one example of a machine with this feature.

4) Motor Power

Angle grinders may have different voltages, amp ratings, and wattages. You choose a grinder with a rating between 110 and 230 volts AC and keep the wattage in a range between 500 and 2,500 watts while focusing on current. The amp rating, which should be in the range of 4 to 15, is another crucial consideration. They often aid in the correlation of the motor’s power. For buyers who are looking for an angle grinder with a lower rating is perfect . However, angle grinders with high amp ratings are necessary for daily usage in heavy industries including steel, iron, metallurgy, and oil & gas.

5) Automatic Speed Control

Normally, load conditions would lead accessories to become clogged during more demanding operations, resulting in a decrease in speed and performance. Some grinders include automated speed control to help with this (or Automatic Torque Drive Technology). For consistent performance, this technology continuously modifies speed and torque in accordance with the state of the load. Automatic speed control is typically found in more expensive professional tools like the Bosch GWS 850 C and Makita DGA506, but it is also available in certain DIY equipment like the Ryobi R18AG7.

6) Corded or Cordless

Grinders require a lot of energy, so if you use one all day, chances are you’re still hooked up to a power source. The latest generation of high voltage tools, such the Makita 36v DGA900 and the DeWalt Flexvolt 54v DCG414, and many of the cordless tools currently on the market, however, are capable of jobs that would have looked impossible a few years ago due to battery technology advancements. With the extra benefit of portability and no power cords to tangle up or trip over, these devices are capable of providing the same performance as corded instruments. The disadvantages of cordless grinders include pricey batteries and runtime issues with more demanding applications. But just like other equipment, cordless tools are incredibly convenient, especially if you’re working outside. A cordless grinder can be really helpful to have on hand for those odd jobs where you don’t want to drag out an extension wire or just need to make a few cuts now and then, even if you’re committed to corded power. To achieve the most runtime possible per battery charge, invest in high capacity batteries (5.0ah and more) and opt for tools with energy-efficient brushless motors.

7) Soft Start Motor

When a typical angle grinder is turned on, the strong motor’s recoil can cause the tool to jerk in the user’s hands. By ramping up to full power in a controlled slope, a soft start motor overcomes this, ensuring that the switch is not abruptly jolted or jarred. This is a common feature in professional grade machines, and it contributes to greater user comfort and control during the working day. It’s also in certain DIY equipment, such as the Black & Decker KG911K and the Ryobi EAG2000RS.

8) Restart Protection

A sliding switch on many angle grinders can be locked in the “on” position to operate continuously. If the power is suddenly interrupted—for example, if the plug is accidentally taken out or a battery needs to be changed—and the machine restarts at full speed as soon as the power is restored, this can be dangerous. Most new tools of this type contain what is frequently referred to as a restart protected or no-volt switch in order to prevent this. In the event of a power outage, this safety device immediately cuts the circuit; to restart the grinder, the switch must first be turned off and then back on. Anybody who has ever been shocked by a live power tool unexpectedly starting up will find this to be a comforting level of user protection.

9) Kickback Protection

Kickback is one of the additional risks associated with using a grinder. This happens when an accessory becomes stuck or pinched, rapidly losing velocity and causing the tool to spring out of the workpiece forcefully, frequently returning to the operator. In addition to harming anyone in the machine’s path and causing wrist injuries, this can also cause abrasive discs to snap and shatter into fast-moving pieces. All grinders are given safety advice on how to prevent kickback, and it is crucial to understand the circumstances that lead to it. To lessen the likelihood of it happening, some equipment also have kickback protection built into them.

These integrated safety systems, which are primarily found in higher-end professional tools and are marketed under a variety of names, including AFT (Makita) and E-Clutch (DeWalt), are made to immediately cut off power if binding conditions are detected, that is, if the speed drops significantly enough to suggest a jammed accessory. This will ideally result in the tool shutting down automatically before kickback can happen, lowering the possibility of harm or injury. The Ryobi R18AG7, Makita DGA700, DeWalt DCG405, Makita DGA900, Bosch GWS 24-230 LVI, and the Bosch GWS 12-125 CI are some examples of angle grinders with kickback protection.

10) Drop Protection

At the moment, a drop sensor in the machine is designed to immediately apply the brakes if it senses that the tool has been dropped, a safety feature that helps to safeguard the user as well as other workers around. This technology is unique to Bosch professional angle grinders. Live angle grinders are capable of traveling alarming distances once dropped so this is another safeguard that can assist to make your workplace safer. The Bosch GWS 18-125 PC and GWS 18V-125 SC are examples of machines using drop control sensors.

11) Overload Protection

Angle grinders frequently work for lengthy periods of time in hot, dusty conditions, and as a result, they frequently have difficult and brief lives before being discarded in the scrap heap. The majority of consumers simply view them as consumable, easily replaceable tools and opt to purchase the least expensive types they are comfortable with. On the other hand, you can get machines with built-in overload protection, a useful feature that helps to safeguard your investment. These devices can recognize when the motor or battery is being overworked and will automatically shut down to avoid dangerous overheating, extending the tool’s lifespan. Machines like the Bosch GWS 18-125 V-LI, Makita DGA506, Makita DGA700, and Makita DGA900 all have overload protection built in.

12) Vibration Control

Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) is the process by which vibrations from power tools travel into the operator’s hands and arms, and HSE rules require employers to take efforts to minimize it in the workplace if employees use instruments such as grinders, sanders, breakers, chainsaws, or hammer drills on a regular basis. Vibration exposure that is sustained over time might have negative health impacts, including the possibility of hand weakness, difficulty grasping small things, and pain in the hands during cold weather. Therefore, if you routinely suffer tingling, numbness, or white fingers from using a grinder, the amount of hand-arm vibration you are subjected to is a crucial element to take into account.

Manufacturers of new angle grinders are required to report these figures, and many power tools today are built with inbuilt vibration dampening devices. You can buy anti-vibration handles, either with new machines or offered separately to retrofit existing ones, to replace the usual hard plastic side handle on angle grinders, which can be a weak point for vibration transmission. Some grinders, like the Makita GA9040S and the Bosch GWS 22-230 LV, have vibration dampening between the trigger switch and the motor as well, protecting both hands from the work surface.

13) Electric Brakes

When disengaging the switch on older models of angle grinders, the spindle may not stop right away. Instead, it slows down gradually until all of the energy is used up. It is not always safe to put the grinder down during this time because if the still-spinning attachment makes contact with a solid object, the machine may skid or jump across the surface, potentially hurting anyone in its path. This can be annoying if you have to put the grinder down frequently, but it also means there may be an alarmingly long period of time when you have to turn the machine off because of a problem, such as if it snags on your clothing or other items, or if you drop it or otherwise lose control of the tool. Fortunately, some producers have taken action to address these problems, and a few angle grinders are available on the market with rapid action brakes that are intended to bring the attachment to a complete stop as soon as the trigger is released. The DeWalt DCG414, DeWalt DCG405, Makita DGA506, Makita DGA900, Makita DGA700 and the Bosch GWS 12-76 all have quick braking systems.
